A thundering drum score and a swirling dance party where the line between musician and dancer blurs.
Rhythm binds us inextricably to the world. It is everywhere - in our steps, our language, our emotions, in life itself. Since antiquity, when it served as a mnemonic device for reciting poetry, rhythm has been used to bring people together: from the chanting of monks to the cadence of a folk dance.
For her new creation, Femke Gyselinck draws on family ties, joining forces with her brother, the musician Lander Gyselinck. They once created a duet together - the performance Flamer (2016) - in which they reversed roles: Femke as the drummer and Lander as the dancer. Now, this story gets a sequel. They welcome seven dancers and four musicians onto the stage, amplifying the strengths of both disciplines. In a time when dance and culture are under pressure, they send a powerful message by choosing a large-scale group piece: the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
In this performance, rhythm is much more than just a component of the music. It is the very foundation where music and dance meet. The patterns of sound and silence aid in memory, helping people sing, play, or drum as a collective. And ultimately, they make dance possible.
