In the afterglow is an ode to the mother and ballet. The 31-year-old Emiel Vandenberghe dances a tender duet with the 82-year-old ballet legend Birgit Keil—between generations, between mentor and student, between artistic mother and son. Their dance stems from the primal relationship between mother and child. What does it mean to share the stage with the body that shaped yours, both as a person and as a dancer?

Afterglow refers to the moment after the brilliance: the afterglow that lingers in the muscles and memory, the feeling that endures after success, after a peak. Although both dancers are past the peak of their ballet careers, they still carry within them that pursuit of technical precision. From movements that no longer chase classical perfection, an image gradually emerges that is reminiscent of a pieta, without the religious connotation. Not one body lifting the other, but alternately carrying, supporting, and allowing each other to rest. In In the afterglow, Vandenberghe wants to find a balance between the legacy of ballet and a highly personal translation of the nurturing bond between mother and child, dancer and icon, discipline and surrender.

Non pas un corps qui soulève l’autre, mais des corps qui, tour à tour, se portent, se soutiennent et se laissent reposer.
