The 11th edition of our jazz festival BRAND! takes place in 2026 from 25th ‘till the 28th November and is dedicated to Denmark, the land of hygge and wood-burning stoves. The peninsula has a long tradition of ‘Dangerous Sounds’ - farlige toner was a frequently used rhetorical term in the Danish press during the 1920s and 30s for any music that threatened to shake public morality. The country has never quite let go of that reputation. With this eleventh edition of BRAND!, we step straight into that Danish sonic history. We are dubbing this edition Dangerous Sounds, after the podcast of the same name (see at the bottom of this page) in which drummer and key figure Kresten Osgood dissects the history of Danish jazz: from forbidden saxophones to slaughterhouse clubs, and from quiet rebellion to loud experimentation.
While we are keeping the full line-up under wraps for now, we are happy to lift a corner of the red-and-white flag. We open with a double bill that immediately embraces the danger: the young Belgian-French revelation Ola Tunji - thriving in free jazz - and ØKSE which, led by pivotal Danish figure Mette Rasmussen, sounds as if the Monday Club from Osgood's stories never closed its doors. The final chord on Saturday is curated by Loveland Music, echoing Copenhagen’s vibrant new jazz festival. Danish guitar virtuoso Jakob Bro is the linchpin and curator of this final evening, gathering a bunch of musicians from Denmark and Belgium in the Jakob Bro Large Ensemble, including our central guest from BRAND! 2025, Hanne De Backer.

OLA TUNJI
Since the summer of 2025, things have been moving fast for Ola Tunji, the Brussels-based quartet centered around saxophonist Ornella Noulet, bound by a shared dedication to the spiritual jazz of John Coltrane. They swept up awards at Gent Jazz Talent and the Avignon Jazz Festival. Their music breathes the intensity and openness of the New Thing movement - the free jazz of the 1960s and beyond.
Their name is a tribute to Babatunde Olatunji, the Nigerian percussionist and friend of John Coltrane, who introduced African percussion to American jazz audiences and helped shape the spiritual dimension of sixties jazz. Inspired by the Coltranes, Pharoah Sanders, and Albert Ayler, the group embraces improvisation as both a political and spiritual act. At BRAND!, they will present their upcoming debut album (W.E.R.F. Records).

ØKSE
ØKSE means axe in Danish - one of humanity's oldest tools: raw and precise, practical and mythical all at once. But ØKSE is more than just steel and wood: it is also Ashe - the life force that flows through everything, animate or inanimate. Ashe is a groove you can tap into; those who follow it will cross paths with this international all-star ensemble.
The quartet, featuring New York-based drummer Savannah Harris, Danish saxophonist Mette Rasmussen, Haitian electronics musician Val Jeanty, and Swedish musician Petter Eldh on bass, synths, and sampler, kicks off BRAND! 2026 with a fitting dose of bravado. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2024 on the renowned Backwoodz label.
In 2025, the band won both the Deutscher Jazzpreis and the Danish Music Award Jazz. Critics hear “everything from jazz to joik to rap to Haitian Vodou” and praise how ØKSE shatters the glass wall between hip-hop and free jazz. The catalyst for all that shattering glass is the friction between improvisation and groove - music that demands new standards.

MARIA LAURETTE FRIIS & THOMAS MORGAN 'COLORS'
What happens when you bring Maria Laurette Friis — the Copenhagen-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, and one of Scandinavia’s most unique voices — together with exceptional double bassist Thomas Morgan for an improvised session? The answer: a subtle, almost 'fantastical' language unfolds all on its own, momentarily escaping time.

In 2016, the formidable trio of Jakob Bro on electric guitar, Thomas Morgan on double bass, and the legendary Joey Baron on drums and percussion released one of the most beautiful ECM albums: Streams. In 2018, Bay of Rainbows followed, marking another milestone for this highly acclaimed trio. Since then, the trio has increasingly experimented with fixed rhythms and the ways in which time is experienced, pulled taut, stretched, and released. These rhythms form the core of their interplay: melodies that emerge as if they had already been written, often carrying a strangely familiar character.
This trio doesn't rely on spectacular tricks; instead, they seek a shared moment and a common language.

JAKOB BRO LARGE ENSEMBLE
Since 2024, Jakob Bro’s Loveland Music Label has been connecting musicians across generations and continents in the Jakob Bro Large Ensemble. This year, BRAND! offers a rare opportunity to see this project at work in Mechelen in an exceptional lineup. Bro’s core players, including Thomas Morgan, Joey Baron, Jesper Zeuthen, and Yannick Peeters (who invited Bro on her JazzLab Impuls tour back in 2014), are joined here by Mads Emil Nielsen and several familiar local voices like Anke Verslype (aki) on drums and saxophonist Hanne De Backer — last year's featured artist at BRAND! 2025.
This mix of original and new faces gives the ensemble a fresh, vibrant dynamic: a large group that breathes like a single organism, at times intimate and small, at others massive and layered. With Jakob Bro on guitar acting as a gentle catalyst, a collective emerges in which listening, creating space, and unexpected combinations are central — a unique encounter that will only happen in this specific lineup at BRAND!.
Dangerous Sounds is an eight-part podcast series that takes you on a historical journey through Danish jazz history.
The story begins in the early 1920s, when the very first jazz sounds drifted over from America. At the time, instruments like the banjo and the saxophone were still viewed by the establishment as an outright threat to culture. The series tracks this musical evolution up into the 1950s and 60s, the period in which the small Danish nation unexpectedly became the global epicenter of jazz.
In Dangerous Sounds, you will discover the deeper impact of the genre: how this 'dangerous' music shook up and shaped society at the time, permanently changing the music we listen to today.

La 11e édition de notre festival de jazz BRAND! se déroulera en 2026, du 25 au 28 novembre, et sera dédiée au Danemark, le pays du hygge et des poêles à bois. La péninsule possède une longue tradition de « Dangerous Sounds » — farlige toner était une rhétorique fréquemment utilisée dans la presse danoise des années 1920 et 1930 pour désigner toute musique qui menaçait de bousculer la moralité publique. Le pays n'a jamais tout à fait abandonné cette réputation. Avec cette onzième édition de BRAND!, nous plongeons directement dans cette histoire sonore danoise. Nous baptisons cette édition Dangerous Sounds, d'après le podcast du même nom (voir au bas de cette page) dans lequel le batteur et figure culte Kresten Osgood décortique l'histoire du jazz danois : des saxophones interdits aux clubs-abattoirs, de la discrète rébellion aux expérimentations bruyantes.
Bien que nous gardions encore la programmation complète sous clé, nous levons un coin du drapeau rouge et blanc. Le festival s'ouvrira sur un double plateau qui embrasse d'emblée le danger : la jeune révélation belgo-française Ola Tunji — s'épanouissant dans le free jazz — et ØKSE qui, sous la direction de la figure clé danoise Mette Rasmussen, sonne comme si le Monday Club des récits d'Osgood n'avait jamais fermé ses portes. L'accord final du samedi est orchestré par Loveland Music, à l'image du nouveau et vibrant festival de jazz de Copenhague. Le virtuose de la guitare danois Jakob Bro est le pivot et le curateur de cette soirée de clôture, réunissant plusieurs musiciens du Danemark et de Belgique au sein du Jakob Bro Large Ensemble, avec notamment notre invitée centrale de BRAND! 2025, Hanne De Backer.

OLA TUNJI
Sinds de zomer van 2025 gaat het hard voor Ola Tunji, het Brusselse kwartet rond saxofoniste Ornella Noulet, met een gedeelde toewijding aan de spirituele jazz van John Coltrane. Ze kaapten prijzen weg op Gent Jazz Talent en het Avignon Jazz Festival. Hun muziek ademt de intensiteit en openheid van de New Thing-beweging, de free jazz vanaf de jaren zestig.
Hun naam is een eerbetoon aan Babatunde Olatunji, de Nigeriaanse percussionist en vriend van John Coltrane, die Afrikaanse percussie introduceerde bij het Amerikaanse jazzpubliek en mee vorm gaf aan de spirituele dimensie van de sixties jazz. Geïnspireerd door de Coltranes, Pharoah Sanders en Albert Ayler, omarmt de groep improvisatie als een politieke en spirituele daad. Op BRAND! stellen ze hun aankomende debuutalbum voor (W.E.R.F. ØKSE
ØKSE betekent bijl in het Deens - een van de oudste werktuigen van de mens: ruw en precies, praktisch en mythisch tegelijk. Maar ØKSE is meer dan alleen staal en hout: het is ook Ashe - de levenskracht die door alles stroomt, levend of levenloos. Ashe is een groove die je kunt aanboren; wie die volgt, komt dit internationale sterrenensemble tegen op hun pad.
Het kwartet van de in New York gevestigde drummer Savannah Harris, de Deense saxofonist Mette Rasmussen, de Haïtiaanse elektronica-muzikant Val Jeanty en de Zweed Petter Eldh op bas, synths en sampler trapt BRAND! 2026 af met een gepaste dosis bravoure. Hun debuut ØKSE verscheen in 2024 op het gerenommeerde Backwoodz-label.
In 2025 won de band zowel de Deutsche Jazzpreis als de Danish Music Award Jazz. Critici horen “alles van jazz tot joik tot rap tot Haïtiaanse Vodou” en prijzen hoe ØKSE de glazen wand tussen hiphop en free jazz verbrijzelt. Oorzaak voor al dat rinkelend glas is de frictie tussen improvisatie en groove - muziek die nieuwe standaarden vereist.

Que se passe-t-il lorsque l'on réunit Maria Laurette Friis — compositrice et multi-instrumentiste basée à Copenhague, et l'une des voix les plus uniques de Scandinavie — et l'exceptionnel contrebassiste Thomas Morgan pour une session improvisée ? La réponse : un langage subtil, presque « fantastique », se déploie en soi, échappant un instant au temps.

En 2016, le formidable trio composé de Jakob Bro à la guitare électrique, Thomas Morgan à la contrebasse et du légendaire Joey Baron à la batterie et aux percussions a sorti l'un des plus beaux albums du label ECM : Streams. En 2018 est paru Bay of Rainbows, un nouveau jalon pour ce trio tant acclamé. Depuis lors, le trio expérimente de plus en plus les rythmes fixes et la manière dont le temps est perçu, mis sous tension, étiré et relâché. Ces rythmes sont au cœur de leur interaction : des mélodies surgissent comme si elles avaient déjà été écrites, souvent empreintes d'une étrange familiarité.
Ce trio ne cherche pas le spectaculaire ni les artifices, mais aspire plutôt à un moment partagé et à un langage commun.

Depuis 2024, le label Loveland Music de Jakob Bro rassemble des artistes au-delà des générations et des continents au sein du Jakob Bro Large Ensemble. Cette année, BRAND! offre une occasion rare de découvrir ce projet à Malines dans une configuration exceptionnelle. Les partenaires clés de Bro, dont Thomas Morgan, Joey Baron, Jesper Zeuthen et Yannick Peeters (qui avait invité Bro lors de sa tournée JazzLab Impuls en 2014), accueillent à leurs côtés Mads Emil Nielsen ainsi que quelques visages familiers de la scène locale, comme Anke Verslype (aki) à la batterie et la saxophoniste Hanne De Backer — artiste centrale de BRAND! 2025.
Ce mélange de visages d'origine et de nouvelles recrues insuffle à l'ensemble une dynamique fraîche et vibrante : un grand collectif qui respire comme un seul organisme, tantôt intimiste et épuré, tantôt massif et texturé. Avec Jakob Bro à la guitare comme catalyseur subtil, il en résulte un projet commun où l'écoute, le partage de l'espace et les combinaisons inédites sont rois — une rencontre unique qui ne se produira dans cette configuration qu'à BRAND!.
