MACONDO TRIO
JAZZLAB
The music of Macondo Trio transports you beyond time and space. Their sounds begin as a gentle warmth beneath the skin, slowly bubbling up and carrying you toward a boiling point. Macondo weaves modal and improvised jazz with African rhythms and melodies from childhood—a blend that brings together the personal stories of the three musicians. They nourish one another musically and spiritually, creating enchanting jazz that begs to be shared.
Macondo Trio’s adventure began when Beninese drummer Angelo Moustapha and Belgian saxophonist Sylvain Debaisieux met. During residencies in Belgium and Benin, they developed a shared rhythmic language centered on improvisation and curious exploration of sound. With the arrival of Italian bassist Federico Stocchi, the trio gained its deep, organic foundation. Their debut EP Macondo, released in December 2022 on Off Records, is the tangible result of pure musical alchemy: energy, groove, and freedom all in one breath.
On their JazzLab tour, they are joined by none other than Brussels-based pianist Wajdi Riahi. A true rising star in Belgian jazz, he has made a name for himself both alongside artists such as Stéphane Galland (The Rhythm Hunters) and on the JazzLab tour with his own Wajdi Riahi Trio in the fall of 2024. With his Tunisian roots and poetic playing, Riahi adds a narrative, Mediterranean glow to Macondo Trio.
The new album Morayò, released in March 2025 on the Dutch label Challenge Records, was enthusiastically received during the release tour in Wallonia and Brussels.
