JOHN, JOHN, JOHN

And the angel’s body was bared, and he was clothed in light
so that eye could not look on him;
The roof opened, and wings appeared upon the angel’s shoulders,
and he rose into the heavens.

Lev Tolstoj

John, John, John, is a visual and musical theatre performance about the importance of rituals and community. Humankind finds itself in a world that is in danger of losing its existing rituals. Many original and therefore recognisable rituals, such as oracles, incantations, campfire stories, sacrificial feasts, the celebration of a god, etc., are experiences that are disappearing, and there are no new, contemporary alternatives (yet). The (divine) rituals seem to be making way for the idea of the 'event'.

Players see an 'empty world' emerging around them, in which individual experience takes centre stage and the digital world seems more important than the physical world. Where the idea of community has disappeared and a form of apparent authenticity seems to drive people further apart rather than bringing them together.
