Children of Simone climbs onto Nina Simone's lap like a group of curious children and starts a conversation: “Was it all worth it? Did you get to live?” they ask her. Led by Emee. (Emeraude Kabeya), the seven-piece collective digs deep into the impressive oeuvre of the jazz icon.

In doing so, they focus on her striking duality: the hope and the fury, the classical child prodigy versus the global superstar, the lonely woman Eunice versus the icon Nina. Well-known songs like I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free and Strange Fruit are naturally included, but they primarily serve as a gateway to the forgotten gems that rarely make it to the stage. In these deep cuts, hope, anger, and vulnerability take center stage. Spoken word flows organically into a sound tapestry of keys, drums, and bass that allows the music to breathe: intimate when needed, monumental when it must be.

Children of Simone se blottit sur les genoux de Nina Simone, telle une bande d'enfants curieux, pour engager la conversation : « Was it all worth it? Did you get to live? » lui demandent-ils. Sous la direction d'Emee. (Emeraude Kabeya), ce collectif de sept artistes explore en profondeur l'impressionnant répertoire de l'icône du jazz.

Ils se concentrent sur sa dualité frappante : l'espoir et la fureur, l'enfant prodige du classique face à la star planétaire, la femme solitaire Eunice face à l'icône Nina. Les morceaux célèbres comme I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free et Strange Fruit répondent bien sûr présents, mais ils servent avant tout de laissez-passer vers des perles oubliées qui trouvent rarement le chemin de la scène. Dans ces morceaux plus confidentiels, l’espoir, la colère et la vulnérabilité passent au premier plan. Le spoken word se fond de manière organique dans un tapis sonore de claviers, batterie et basse qui laisse la musique respirer : intimiste quand il le faut, monumentale quand il le faut.
