CHILDREN OF SIMONE
JAZZLAB
Children of Simone emerged from the Leuven Jazz Festival: a collective that showcases young talent and celebrates the power of an all-female lineup. They embody the tension between vulnerability and resistance, making Nina Simone’s message and musical legacy both urgent and inescapable.
With Children of Simone, the Leuven-based ensemble led by Emeraude Kabeya pays tribute to an icon who continues to inspire generations. Seven singers join their voices to give new life to Simone’s message of freedom, struggle, and vulnerability. From her greatest classics to her most intimate gems: a kaleidoscope of emotions unfolds, each time with an intensity that strikes the audience right in the heart.
Children of Simone is an artistic endeavor to honor an often-misunderstood soul—a woman who is an integral part of our shared cultural experience. Through spoken word, the Children bring the performance into the present and connect Simone’s timeless music with the social and personal stories of today. The vocal power is supported by a trio of musicians consisting of Maura Delbare, Mien Heyvaert, and Caro Abutoh. With sparkling keys, pulsating drums, and a deep, warm bass, they create a soundscape that elevates the voices, amplifies the emotions, and makes the music both intimate and monumental.
In the 26–27 season, Children of Simone will be performing exclusively at JazzLab Impuls partner venues, following the creation period. Starting in the 27–28 season, the production will go on tour as a regular JazzLab program.
