Fabrizio Cassol, the saxophonist at Aka Moon, has been exploring Ludwig van Beethoven’s last piano sonata, Opus 111. This monumental piece is an emotional roller coaster and a fine example of musical architecture. Following productions such as VSPRS (Monteverdi’s Vespers), Pitié! (Bach’s St Matthew Passion) and Requiem for L. (Mozart’s Requiem), Opus 111 is a logical step for Aka Moon in its journey through intercultural re-readings of classical repertoire. The trio – Cassol plus Michel Hatzigeorgiou on the electric bass and Stéphane Galland on drums – is joined by artists such as Fredy Massamba, an African storyteller of great expressive power who is inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s letters.
