ATTENTION: for obvious reasons this concert has been canceled.

This evening’s headline act is Nordmann. The combination of the freedom of impro jazz and the power of rock took the quartet as it was at the time to second place in Humo’s Rock Rally in 2014. On their debut Alarm (2015), the four musicians captured the power of their live performances in a studio recording. A year later, their universally praised The Boiling Ground resulted in a tour of more than 50 performances in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the Czech Republic. De Standaard described their stint at Pukkelpop 2017 as the second best concert in the entire festival.

“Segers was completely in the moment, with his relaxed presentation of an engaging story that held our attention throughout. Nice work!”
- Written In Music on Simon Segers’ concert at Gent Jazz 2019

Now it is time for a new chapter, evolving in a new way. In Velvet promises to be a many-layered studio album that wraps itself around the listener like a warm blanket, with rock making way for electronics. A coherent, compact-sounding album in which the individual musicians’ personal development and the influence of their excursions into other projects is audible throughout. These musicians are familiar faces at nona. We have seen the saxophonist Mattias De Craene with MDCIII and Sylvie Kreusch; the guitarist Edmund Lauret and the new member of the band Thijs Troch (synths and guitar) were guests at the BRAND! Jazz Festival 2019 with The Milk Factory, along with drummer Elias Devoldere and his socially engaged project De Koffie Van Morgen. With the bassist Dries Geusens (Molten Penguin, Rapidman) completing the picture, this quintet is ready to cause an international storm. Hopefully our concert hall will escape relatively unscathed.

Simon Segers

As a musician with top bands including De Beren Gieren, Black Flower, Stadt and MDCIII, Simon Segers has created a unique style that is firmly rooted in timing but still free. When performing solo, the drummer uses slowly constructed motifs and a tightly controlled tension curve. Don’t expect songs in a traditional format or perfectly rendered exercises in style, but rather powerfully constructed soundscapes with a tribal touch.

Since his early teens, Segers and his brother Frederik have played in countless projects. He studied with big names like Teun Verbruggen and Jim Black at Ghent Conservatory. No genre is a stranger to him: rock, pop, jazz or free. He still makes his own mark on projects. Seger’s style is very unusual. He drums with an incantatory, propulsive power that sounds both repetitive and varied. His live work is never boring.
