In an age of hysterical multitasking and incessant floods of images, it seems that even musicians need to absorb and reproduce more and more. Cross-over, eclecticism and multi-genre work are no longer optional. They have become standard acts in a circus that no longer tolerates a closer focus or modesty. So maybe The Milk Factory turned up at exactly the right time.

Close interaction
Its founders Edmund Lauret (guitar) and Thijs Troch (piano – also appearing on day 1 of BRAND! with De Koffie Van Morgen) made a few priorities clear right from the outset: no umpteenth exercise in a brash obsession with action, no unfocused stylistic mishmash, no overconfident tub-thumping. What they did want were melodies, close interaction, consistent atmospheres and songs. So they called in four musician friends with a track record as colourful as their own.
Intoxicating melancholy
Viktor Perdieus (tenor saxophone) and Jan Daelman (flute) form a front line dedicated to an elegant cadence; the rhythm section, Kobe Boon (bass) and Benjamin Elegheert (drums) provides discreet power and heartfelt support. On its untitled debut EP, the sextet excels with restrained rapture and intoxicating melancholy. The Milk Factory does not make grand gesticulations in music, but small gestures. Dreamy intimacy and shuffling playfulness, with openness and space to breathe.
