The Swiss jazz saxophonist María Grand is causing a furore. The Expanded Critics Poll by the renowned American magazine JazzTimes voted her “Best New Artist 2018”. In the same year, her debut album Magdalena was in Billboard’s top ten best jazz albums.

Grand has lived in New York since 2011, where she has worked with musicians including the guitarist Mary Halvorson and the pianists Vijay Iyer and Craig Taborn. In 2018, Grand helped to found the We Have Voice Collective, which protested on behalf of the jazz community against sexual harassment and in favour of gender equality.
“A fantastic young saxophonist, virtuosic, conceptually daring, with a lush tone, a powerful vision, and a deepening emotional resonance.”

Now Grand is bringing her own band to Belgium. An all-female trio – at last! – with the double bassist Kanoa Mendenhall, of Japanese origin, and the American drummer Savannah Harris. Their new album is due for release soon, and they are ready to fascinate ever-larger audiences. Grand has chosen to write compositions based on the process of pregnancy, and recorded the music while she was expecting her first child.
