Ruben Machtelinckx has a new quartet. Unsurprisingly perhaps, the guitar takes pride of place: specifically the steel string guitar with its typical ‘Western’ sound. The guitarist and composer is joined for the occasion by Bert Cools on the steel string guitar, Toma Gouband on percussion and Joachim Badenhorst on the sax and clarinet.

The quartet focuses on acoustic music. Machtelinckx was consciously looking for spare compositions, fragile improvisations and silence. A lot of silence. The group’s motto? Not playing is not a lack of sound, but a space full of tension and possibilities.
