In early 2020, Lara Rosseel was the big surprise on the Belgian jazz scene. She suddenly conquered venue after venue with De Grote Vrouw, an album she released herself. With hindsight, however, it was a success waiting to happen. Rosseel’s septet has a pronouncedly luxurious colour, and her compositions – that are regularly steeped in exotic influences – balance on the enviable border between mystery and familiarity. The music wants little to do with boastful acrobatics, preferring a loud heartbeat that keeps time with a wide audience.

Under the moniker Lara Rosseel Quintet, the double bassist continues her conquest with a young quintet as well as new repertoire. We recognise Vitja Pauwels (Hendrik Lasure Warm Bad, Bombataz), Sep François (Ifa y Xangô), Sam Vloemans (El Tattoo del Tigre, Dez Mona) and Angelo Moustapha (Philippe Catherine). With these gentlemen in tow, the talents with which she has captured musical hearts will surely take her down new pathways. The new album will be out in early 2022, followed by a release tour. Luckily for us, the tour will be stopping by at nona as well.
