James Brandon Lewis Trio
James Brandon Lewis resolutely chooses the tenor sax. Like no other, he knows the rich history of the instrument, but also knows how to employ it in thoroughly contemporary contexts. Lewis has rapidly become one of the most lauded and prolific voices of his generation, an artist whose work is characterized by a unique intensity and an instantly recognizable sound.
Lewis' approach unites old and new, inside and outside, density and openness, church and street. The son of a minister, Lewis grew up with gospel tradition, which he seamlessly blends with glowing, soulful passion that recalls such guns as Charles Gayle, David Murray and the great John Coltrane, but also betrays the influence of contemporary hip-hop.
After moving to New York, you could hear him alongside such luminaries as William Parker and Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and he led an impressive list of bands. On his An UnRuly Manifesto he was joined by the late Jaimie Branch, his duo with Chad Taylor ranks among the best in modern jazz, and Jesup Wagon from his Red Lily Quintet ranks as a modern classic. Now he presents his latest album Eye Of I, which will be released in February through the ANTI Records label.

"James Brandon Lewis' solos are like a jumbo jet. You have to give them plenty of room to take off and land. Because they are huge, not only in terms of sound, chops, soul, ideas, energy and originality, but because they carry a precious cargo: the living legacy of John Coltrane."

Dishwasher_
Dish_what?! Dishwasher_ makes jazz for the non-jazz lovers. The three youngsters try to scrub away all possible walls between genres to create a fresh sound and style. Due to their great admiration for computer-produced music (Aphex Twin is a hero), the trio approaches their instruments in such a way that there is no longer any association with a classical jazz trio. Live, their energetic set takes unexpected turns through improvisation where compositions are stretched, changed or broken up so that the band (and the audience) can fully surrender to the moment. Gent Jazz already had to believe it. Now it's nona's turn.
“There is no singing on Dishwasher_, but Van Den Bossche's sax more than makes up for that, while the other two lay down a delicious groove.”
