Reed player Joachim Badenhorst is one of the most striking personalities on the contemporary Belgian jazz landscape. Whether he is working solo or in one of his many constellations, international or otherwise (such as Rawfishboys, Baloni, Os Meus Shorts, Red Rocket and Mogil), he remains a restless adventure-seeker and a wonderful storyteller. He is a familiar face by now at nona. During the opening of last season, he turned heads as Zero Years Kid in loops, at BRAND! 2019 he did the honours in Ruben Machtelinckx’ Porous Structures and he was the main guest at the first edition of BRAND! in 2015. Carate Urio Orchestra is Badenhorst’s outlet for combining cinematic, experimental noise and postrock with jazz and impro as a singer-songwriter. Or something along those lines.

After a fruitful period of five years and four albums – two of which were recorded at nona – the group went quiet for a while, but now he is back with a new, international team. Expect lots of new composed music and plenty of enthusiasm.
Badenhorst has brought together a group of European musicians to form the Carate Urio Orchestra. He has played at nona in the past in a duo with the French double bassist Brice Soniano. The group also contains two Irishmen (drummer Sean Carpio and bassist and guitarist Simon Jermyn) the American horn player Jeremy Thal and the Belgian guitarist Bert Cools. The ensemble has created a unique musical alphabet that explores the field of tension between epic rock and minimalist ambient. In the midst of all that, it does not shy away from shameless singer-songwriter allures. This concert will be a bit rough with an infectious side. And boisterous to boot.
