The Belgian-Burkish choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly and his Faso Danse Théâtre present a dance performance inspired by the life of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, the inventor of afrobeat but also the figurehead of the resistance movement in West Africa. In 1974, he put up a fence around his house and proclaimed the Kalakuta Republik. From his 'independent republic' he fought for justice, with music as his most important weapon.
Serge Aimé Coulibaly translates Kuti's struggle into an energetic and committed dance performance. To rousing music inspired by Kuti's afrobeat, Coulibaly and seven dancers search for their position as artists on a continent increasingly thrown back on itself. Their dance is sensual and wild, they have paint on their faces like warriors in war. Kalakuta Republik is a blistering performance about Africa, but without the clichés. An Africa in a globalised world that Coulibaly wants to bring to the fore.

"In Kalakuta Republik, Serge Aimé Coulibaly magically unites music, dance and the African revolution."
La Libre Belgique
Kalakuta Republik is neither a biography of Fela Kuti nor an animated concert. Serge Aimé Coulibaly and his company were inspired by this figure to investigate what (artistic) engagement can mean today and, more specifically, the position of the artist once he is followed by a movement.
