Backback
The evening will open with Backback, a flamboyant Ghent-based trio that explores the zone between jazz, rock and solid grooves. The powerful riffs of Filip Wauters – also at nona later this season with his ensemble SPOOK, alongside double bassist Nicolas Rombouts and drummer Simon Segers, and also familiar from bands including Het Zesde Metaal and The Whodads – and Marc De Maeseneer’s bombastic sax are the perfect match for master drummer Giovanni Barcella’s nuanced yet unfettered sound.

With this set, Backback will pay tribute to Duke Ellington’s impressive musical career. He was an innovator who spanned the gap between the blues and the avant-garde, with dance music for the “Cotton Club”, suites and longer compositions that are closer to contemporary classical music, countless recordings for smaller settings and solo piano work. Backback will tackle a selection of Ellington’s lesser-known work. Big band arrangements make way for the essentials, with the tried and tested, no-nonsense approach and powerful sound we have come to expect from Backback. Incidentally, the trio’s new, fifth album will be out in the autumn. Exciting.
Don Kapot
Don Kapot is the perfect complement to Backback. How to sum up the trio in a single word? Groove, groove and more groove. The exhilarating, physical kind. Drummer Jakob Warmenbol (Robbing Millions, M(h)ysteria) and bassist Giotis Damianidis (Punk Kong) used to be members of Oghene Kologbo’s World Squad, an Afrobeat sensation from Brussels. Along with baritone saxophonist Viktor Perdieus (The Milk Factory, Ifa y Xango), they build on the work of Tony Allen, Fela Kuti and Kologbo.
Their first full album, Hooligan, released by WERF Records in spring 2021, received enthusiastic reviews. The compositions are based on improvisations, combining the energy and freedom of free jazz with the total trance of good dance music. Strong and hypnotic: Don Kapot is nothing short of a groove machine, already causing a sensation with its rousing concerts and contagious humour. Our humble advice: get ready to dance.
