Angela Kasner grew up as a vicar’s daughter in East Germany. Her aunt in West Germany often sent her gifts such as Levi’s jeans or Beatles records. Angela longed for freedom, the West. When the Wall came down, she decided to give up her scientific career and go into politics. “Someone who has had such a pleasant surprise in their life believes that a lot of things are possible”, is her comment on that.

“Macht kommt von machen, etwas tun können.”
Fictional portrait
Angela Kasner, whom we all know now as Angela Merkel, is a woman who exists. angel is a play about a woman who does not exist, but is slightly based on the real Angela: a woman whose search for more and more possibilities turns her into a world leader. A fictional portrait based on real facts.
Dreaming of the impossible sometimes makes half of it come true. In angel, Nele Vereecken unleashes the imagination on an important contemporary political figure. How far can you take that kind of imagining? When does imagination become a lie? And is that lie a logical reality that everyone accepts?
Nele Vereecken is an actor, coach, writer and theatre maker. She studied at the RITCS in Brussels. In 2014 her debut as a director, Lydia, was premiered at the KVS: a monologue about a biologist who is awarded a prize for her career in research. In 2016 Vereecken created the play 21 Secolo with Theater Tartaar, in which eleven actors with disabilities explored the issues facing refugees.
